Civil Drainage Contractors North West
Mitre Civils UK LTD welcomes commercial drainage enquiries from developers, main contractors, landowners and property operators across North West England. Bring together foul drainage, surface water management and associated groundworks in a clearly defined construction package. Send your drawings, site location and programme to begin a practical discussion about buildability, access and the information needed for a tender.

A civil drainage package built around the whole site
Civil drainage contractors need to understand how underground infrastructure supports the wider development. A pipe run cannot be considered independently of formation levels, roads, building thresholds, utility corridors and the agreed outfall. We welcome enquiries for new networks, replacements and diversions alongside the excavation and reinstatement required to complete the work. The first priority is to establish the intended function and boundaries of the package.
For a main contractor, this means identifying where our work starts and finishes, who supplies the drainage design and which inspections are needed before follow-on trades proceed. For an owner, it means understanding the cause of the existing problem and whether the proposal addresses it. A clear specification allows competing tenders to be compared fairly and reduces ambiguity when unexpected conditions are encountered.
Foul drainage and surface water require different decisions
Foul drainage conveys wastewater to an appropriate treatment or sewer connection. Surface water drainage manages rainfall from roofs, yards, roads and other contributing areas. The systems have different design assumptions and should not be combined simply because an existing connection appears convenient. Establish the receiving network, ownership and proposed discharge before selecting a construction detail.
A tender may include pipe trenches, access chambers, gullies and channel drainage, subject to approved design information. Chamber positions should allow inspection and maintenance without creating unnecessary conflict with vehicle routes or structures. Pipe sizes, gradients, bedding and cover are design decisions based on flows, ground conditions and loading. We discuss these interfaces before the construction method and price are finalised.
North West ground conditions: investigate before committing
Sites around Chorley and Preston may include clay-rich glacial deposits where infiltration performance requires testing. Greater Manchester and Liverpool redevelopment sites may contain variable made ground, former foundations, redundant services or contamination. Coastal and low-lying sites may also require closer investigation of seasonal groundwater. These are regional considerations, not a prediction of the conditions on any individual plot.
The construction scope should respond to site investigation records, trial holes and the designer’s requirements. Wet ground can influence excavation stability, material handling, temporary works and the permanent drainage solution. An assumption that a deeper soakaway will always solve poor drainage can be costly. Establish infiltration suitability and groundwater constraints before relying on discharge to ground.
Commercial drainage engineering and SuDS coordination
Surface water attenuation is one part of a wider drainage strategy. The designer should consider where runoff goes, how it is treated, how extreme events are managed and who will maintain the completed assets. A below-ground tank may be appropriate on some developments, while other schemes may incorporate permeable surfaces, swales, basins or a combination of features.
Our construction discussions focus on translating the agreed design into an achievable package. Identify storage footprints, access for deliveries, formation requirements, structural loading and inspection arrangements. Agree who coordinates suppliers and design changes. A product substitution should be reviewed for hydraulic, structural and maintenance implications rather than treated as an equivalent merely because its stated storage volume is similar.
Excavation, temporary works and live-site access
Underground construction can create risks for people, adjacent structures and essential services. The method must reflect excavation depth, soil behaviour, groundwater, plant position and available working space. Competent temporary works planning may be needed for support systems or other site-specific measures. There is no universal safe excavation depth that removes the need to assess stability.
On an occupied commercial site, the programme should also protect deliveries, pedestrian routes and emergency access. Agree work zones, temporary crossing arrangements and the sequence of connections. Existing drainage may need to remain operational until a planned changeover. The tender should distinguish permanent work from temporary bypasses, traffic management and other measures that depend on the owner’s operational requirements.
Quality records that support a useful handover
Agree an inspection and test plan before the first trench is backfilled. Depending on the specification, the evidence may include pipe and chamber schedules, levels, material records, photographs, testing and a completion survey. The purpose is to demonstrate the work against agreed acceptance criteria, not simply to assemble paperwork at the end.
Record changes while their location and reason remain clear. Covers, cleaning points and flow controls should remain accessible after landscaping and surfacing. A maintenance plan should explain what needs inspection and how access will be achieved. Where another party will adopt or operate the network, establish its information requirements before ordering components or arranging final reinstatement.
From enquiry to a comparable commercial tender
Send the site postcode, drainage layouts, existing survey information, proposed levels and any available investigation records. Tell us whether the project is new construction, a diversion or an operational-site upgrade. Include the expected start date, working hours and the main constraints. Where information is incomplete, identify the assumptions rather than leaving them implicit.
A useful tender separates measured work, provisional allowances, exclusions and responsibilities. It should make clear whether design, approvals, connection charges, disposal testing and reinstatement are included. Our aim at enquiry stage is to establish a scope that can be assessed properly. A site survey or further design input may be necessary before a firm construction quotation can be offered.
Standards, approvals and responsibility boundaries
The applicable construction specification and current standards should be confirmed by the designer for the particular works. BS EN 1610 addresses construction and testing of drains and sewers. BS 8301 is a withdrawn legacy reference and should not be presented as a current blanket compliance standard. Where older drawings cite it, ask the design team to confirm the appropriate current requirements before relying on the detail.
CDM 2015 duties need to be allocated to the relevant project participants. A contractor’s construction method does not remove the client’s or designer’s responsibilities. The project team should establish required permissions for sewer connections, watercourse work and regulated discharges. Planning approval, building control acceptance, adoption and environmental consent are separate matters; the applicable route depends on the actual scheme.
Discuss the project with Mitre Civils UK LTD
Mitre Civils UK LTD brings over 30 years of experience to drainage, groundworks and external works enquiries. We focus the initial discussion on the site, proposed outcome and information available. Send the postcode, photographs, drawings and desired programme to mitrecivils@gmail.com, or call 01257 262715 or 07444 689100.
A useful enquiry explains who owns or controls the site, which operations must continue and what decisions remain outstanding. We will discuss whether a site visit, survey or additional design input is appropriate before a construction scope is agreed. Survey arrangements, pricing and attendance are confirmed for each project. An enquiry does not itself book an engineer or constitute a fixed quotation.
Agree the construction scope before mobilisation
Before mobilisation, confirm the latest drawing revisions, the authorised site contact and how instructions will be recorded. Identify prerequisites such as access permissions, utility investigation and approval of the proposed materials. The agreed programme should show dependencies on other trades and any inspections that could prevent work being covered. Keep a written record of changes to scope, quantities or sequence so their programme and cost implications can be reviewed while the work remains visible. These practical arrangements help the project team make informed decisions throughout construction and support a clear handover to the owner or operator.
